Baby Steps to a New Nursery!
In July 2021 we shared the story of Makapwa with our donors & supporters. In fact we went a step further and decided to commit to building a new nursery for the community even before we began fundraising. Why wait! It’s now October and in Malawi the trenches for the school’s foundations have been dug for both the school and the accompanying toilet. In many ways we have done things backwards and perhaps we should have waited for the donations to arrive first. Nonetheless we’re committed and this week we made the payment for 6,000 hydraform (eco) blocks & 150 bags of cement. Our campaign is live and we really do need help to keep a promise we made on your behalf. If you can help please do- a little can go a long way!
Community Kindness
The Makapwa community have always looked after their nursery despite many challenges. Now they’ve extended their kindness to the workers building the new nursery. The school treasurer has given us use of his almost completed house (see above image) to store materials and to accommodate builders who can’t make the journey home each day. Our delivery truck wasn’t able to make it to the site so the community helped us move the blocks- no problem!
Community Voices
Ethel (pictured above on left) is a mother of 3 x children some of whom attend the nursery. She grew up in Kajawo village where the Makawpwa CBCC is located and she is one of many who expressed her delight that the community will have a safe learning environment for their children. She also believes the new school building will encourage more parents to send their children to nursery- we certainly hope so!
“I am very happy with what Seibo keeps doing for our community, we didn’t expect this and we do not take it for granted you keep pushing for us. We are usually by-passed for development activities as we are hard to reach and that is why our area is called “Makapwa” which means ‘it’s of no use/ doesn’t have value’. May God bless Seibo abundantly!”
Moreson is the counsellor to the Village Headman. He never imagined his village would have a well-built classroom but God has showed them that he remembers his people. As a leader and a parent he is confident the nursery will shape the future of the children & community as a whole.
– “All we can say this is thank you so much Seibo, there is no better way we can show our appreciation but we are going to show our gratitude by participating fully in every stage of the construction and taking very good care of the school after the school has been handed over to us”
Lamson (pictured above) is the Chairperson of Makapwa CBCC. He felt that the coming of the nursery will not only promote education but will also allow parents to focus on the development of the community while the kids are at school.– “Thank you so much to our donors, we do not take this for granted. May the good Lord richly bless you”.
Miles (pictured above on left) is a 70-year old man who settled in Makapwa in 1987. He never imagined Makapwa would receive support in any way being as isolated as it is. He is ready to play his part carrying sand from the river until everything is finished. “I believe that my community is going to have a brighter future through these bright children since early learning is provided”
Alice is grandmother to three nursery-age children attending Makapwa. At first she was hesitant to believe as she had seen many failed developments. Now the work has begun the excitement is building. She hopes she can play her part by collecting sand and water when construction begins. Although Alice never received any formal schooling it was always her hope her grandchildren would have access to quality education in a good environment.
Loveness worked previously as a committee member of the nursery school. “Three of my children have gone through this school, even now I have a grandchild who is learning at the school. I have a responsibility to support any development happening at the school. Thank you Seibo”
Wonderful Pressure (Help!)
When our team in Malawi tell us someone needs help they’re never wrong. They work among the poorest of the poor in our world and yet it is rare that they ask for more help than our donors are already giving. However there are times when they shout out- and they did so for Makapwa. Not is our turn to ask you- as a Seibo supporter- to donate- to make a difference- and to help us build a new nursery for the children & community of Makapwa. Please do what you can- a little goes a long way- DONATE HERE!
