Kazomba Primary School, Mzimba District
No. of Students: 800
School Feeding Start Date: 27th April 2016
Kazomba Primary School is a key school in the story of Seibo.
From October 2013 the school was the recipient of rice flour sent from Japan for the purpose of school-feeding. The rice flour which was grown in Tono City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan was sent to Malawi by JOCA (Japanese Overseas Cooperative Association). The rice flour donated from Japan was expected to come to an end by July 2016 and no plans were in place to continue the project.
As such on the 27th of April 2016 Seibo committed to continuing school feeding in Kazomba with locally-sourced food. What began as a community re-building exercise for rice farmers in northern Japan was set to become a movement- to ensure every hungry child in the world receives a hot meal at school.
On July 12th 2016 Seibo Managing Director announced that Seibo would continue, with the continued support and kindness of donors in Japan and elsewhere, expand school feeding to all 12 primary schools in the area around Kazomba- known as the Kaphuta Zone. By November of 2016 school feeding had begun at the 4 x remaining schools and a total of 12,262 primary school children were in receipt of a hot meal at school.
16th February 2017:
On the day the Seibo team in Malawi visited Kazomba the cooking had begun late and only 4 volunteers had turned up. While the school seemed to have put in place adequate stock control and food management systems they had yet to adapt to the new government directives although discussions are underway with all stakeholders.
It was noted that extra training may also be needed on the required amount of firewood for use in rocket stoves and the Seibo team in Malawi took notes to follow up.
