On May 8, 2024, the first class of the 2024 academic year was held at Koen Womens’ Junior high and high school. Last year, for a special course over ten months, the Seibo NPO conducted special lectures. This year, in order to further deepen the learning from last year, we conducted a class titled “Experience and Deepen International NPO Activities.”
Overview of the Class
For the first class, we conducted an introduction to NPO organizations and Malawi to connect with students for future learning. Midway through the class, we connected with primary school students in Malawi online and interacted with children waiting for meals at schools where we will conduct support activities.
Objectives of the Class
First, we discussed what could be learned through this class and how it could be applied in the future. Then, we explained the missions of NPO organizations, which students may not usually interact with in their daily lives, and discussed our own mission with the students.
Differences Between Japan and Malawi
We asked students to consider the differences between school meals in Japan and Malawi. Through this, we learned about Malawi, the country we will support in the future, and why Malawi was chosen. Subsequently, by connecting with St. Paul’s Primary School in Malawi via Zoom, we experienced who the children we are supporting are and clarified the purpose of our future activities, as two Malawian students in 7th grade (1st year of junior high school) expressed their gratitude in English.
Importance of School Meals
Finally, we contemplated the significance of school meals. When a meal is guaranteed for a child by attending school, parents can send their children to school with peace of mind and have time to work while meals are prepared. This allows children to continue attending school without dropping out, ultimately expanding their future job opportunities. Therefore, we concluded by explaining the significant impact of school meal support.
Through this class, we believe we were able to cultivate an understanding of the significance of future classes and instill a sense of ownership in supporting others.
