School feeding Start Date: 11th February 2016
Mwayi Nursery, Chilomoni
Seibo Japan working with our partners in Malawi will implement under-5 school feeding with your help starting with the community of Chilomoni.
Working through the 30-plus nurseries partnered with our Children’s Centre we hope to roll out school feeding to complement the current efforts in the community to raise the level of childcare in community nurseries and of course to tackle growing malnutrition among under-5’s.
This series of posts hopes to give you an insight into the level of childcare facilities in Malawi. Today’s featured nursery is the Mwayi Nursery and this snapshot is based on a visit by our local partners in early October.
Number of Children: 46 enrolled but only 19 present on the day of the visit aged between 1 year and 6 years old
Staff: 4 but only 3 present on the day of visit
Fees: Parents do not pay fees
Feeding: As most children are orphans the staff collect donations of flour in the community in order to provide the children with a meal so feeding does happen when food is made available.
Building: The nursery building is a simple hay/reed structure and is very small when you consider the maximum number of children using this facility is 46.
There are no resources for the children to use in the nursery and water is collected from a tap offsite.
The nursery is open on mornings only from Monday to Friday.
With your help we can improve this situation and depending on the level of support can even consider building a separate feeding shelter to enable this nursery to become a feeding station for other children not enrolled at any local nursery.
The decision is entirely yours.
