School feeding Start Date: 15th March 2016
Mogina Nursery
CLOSED – 5th May 2017
Mogina Nursery is run by 2 teachers. On our day of visit there was only one, however. 12 children were present: 4 boys and 8 girls. Their ages range from 8 months to 5 years.
The fees are 1500 kwacha, but for those unable to afford this fee, the lead teacher reduces it to 1000 kwacha.
The building is rented. Rent is 5000 per month. Set up and off the main road out of Chilomoni, the nursery is held in a long, barn-like, rectangular building. The walls are wooden slats and only half height, with the top slats missing at present. This allows for light and ventilation, but it does present a safety issue regards storage onsite. A corrugated roof sits above. There is a wooden door with bolted lock.
One bench desk is used for the children to sit on, but otherwise there are limited resources – just a table for the teacher, a chalkboard and some posters hang on the walls. Bare dirt floor.
Preparation area is available outside. The lead teacher collects water from her home before coming to nursery each day. A toilet is utilized outside.
A timetable is implemented and rotated. Monday – Thursday 8am-3pm. Friday half day as usual.
Update: It is with sadness that we report that as of May 2017 we have suspended school feeding at Mogina Nursery. Having made a delivery of food on the 27th April it was noticed on a routine visit on the 5th of May that the school was closed. In communication with the school director the Seibo team in Malawi learned that the school would be closed until the 19th of May. Subsequent visits confirm however the school has not re-opened and as we have not received any formal communication we have no choice but to suspend school feeding.
We hope to be able to update the profile for Mogina Nursery with more positive news over the coming weeks and months.
Mogina CLOSED
It is with great regret that we announce the closure of the Mogina Nursery.
The school director, Mrs Kafandiya, passed away at the start of 2017 and her husband struggled to keep the school open. While there is still a possibility in the future of the school re-opening Seibo have re-allocated assigned Seibo Kids and taken back the school feeding equipment.
