Machelechete Primary School, Mzimba District
No. of Students: 455
School Feeding Start Date: October 27th 2016
Machelechete Primary School is located in Burukutu village but surrounded by another 15 villages. The road to Mzuzu is 150 metres from the school.
8 teachers (5 female, 3 male) run the school assisted by various committees including the School Feeding Committee headed by Mr. C. Mzira. The school itself is well-built. Each classroom has a chalk board but few classrooms have desks. There are a few toilets on site and water can be accessed from a nearby borehole (well).
At the time of launching school feeding no storeroom had yet been built.
The launch began at 6am and included an orentation/training on rocket stove usage as well as health & safety issues.
Orientation on rocket stove usage and safety and hygiene started the launch at 6am. The volunteers were shown how to cook, and cook safely before mugs were distributed to the 455 children in attendance
A Standard 8 student, Katalo Msimuko, read a poem and believes that with the coming of school feeding there will be no more school drop-outs. Mr. Goma, Head Teacher, concurs saying the programme will boost the school enrollment and absenteeism will be reduced since the children will have something to eat.
15th February 2017: At the time of Seibo’s visit in February enrollment had risen to 482 students- 252 boys, 230 girls. Perhaps due to the relatively small number of learners in comparison with other schools they were managing to adapt to new government directives to serve the school meal before lessons.
