International Baccalaureate and Seibo
Date:2024.06.20

NPO Seibo has been incorporated into the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and collaborates with IB World Schools. In particular, within CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), which strongly emphasizes the aspect of “service,” we work with students to embody Seibo’s mission of school meal support and develop sustainable activities through learning.

International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a globally recognized educational program founded in Switzerland, emphasizing critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, and intercultural understanding. The Diploma Programme (DP), designed for students aged 16 to 19, is a two-year course that includes six subject groups along with three core components: CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), TOK (Theory of Knowledge), and EE (Extended Essay).

What is CAS?
CAS is a program consisting of three key areas: Creativity, Activity, and Service. It encourages students to engage in extracurricular activities such as artistic pursuits, sports, and volunteer work, fostering not only academic development but also personal growth and social responsibility. As a mandatory component of the DP, CAS plays a vital role in nurturing student initiative and collaboration skills.

CAS Working Group at Shizuoka Salesio High School
At Shizuoka Salesio High School, a private school in Shizuoka, students participated in a CAS project in collaboration with Seibo, engaging in meaningful and creative activities.
Working in teams of three, students emphasized teamwork throughout the process.

Below is a reflection from one of the group leaders:

“We learned about Malawian coffee and discussed within our group how to effectively promote it when selling it. We considered key selling points and how to engage potential customers. Using eye-catching slogans on placards, we tried to attract attention. Initially, it was very challenging, as few people stopped to listen. However, as we shared feedback among ourselves on how to approach people, adjust our eye contact, and guide conversations, we gradually became more successful. Through this program, we not only deepened our understanding of the coffee and tea we sold but also realized how difficult it is to effectively communicate their appeal to others.”

This group stood out as they created an activity from scratch with facilitation from Seibo staff.

[IB Consortium] Membership in the MEXT IB Education Promotion Consortium
Seibo is also a member of the IB Education Promotion Consortium supported by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). Through this, we regularly exchange information and introduce our activities to schools.

We hope that through these initiatives, our ongoing efforts to support the next generation in Malawi will also contribute to the education of Japan’s next generation!
