Davy Primary School, Mzimba District
No. of Students: 618
School Feeding Start Date: 28th November 2016
Located 2 kilometers north-east of Mzimba in the area of Group Village Head Hezekiah Mwanza the Davy Primary School has 10 x feeder villages. With an enrolment of 618 learners and 24 teachers – 16 of which are qualified and the rest “student-teachers” , Davy can be considered a small school.
16th February 2017: A visit from the Seibo team in Malawi reported that enrollment on that day was 644 students- 357 boys, 287 girls.
The increase in numbers sometimes led to smaller portions being handed out due to not enough food being prepared. There was also an issue with volunteer no-shows.
The school voiced their concerns about new government directives ensuring food be prepared and served before lessons begin as in their case it would mean asking volunteer-cooks to come around midnight and work through the night.
The school also asked and were given permission to sell empty food sacks to the villagers. The proceeds raised will be used to purchase soap, matches, etc. They priced the 20kg sack at MK 100 & the 5kg back at MK 20.
