Cyclone Freddy has left its mark on Malawi. Over 400 deaths have been reported so far, hundreds more are unaccounted for, and the government has declared a 14-day national mourning period. The devastation is impossible to describe. Malawi is no stranger to floods having been visited by Cyclone Ana in January 2022. Storms aside, things have been tough in Malawi with rampant inflation and a recent outbreak of cholera. As a result of the cyclone there are now makeshift camps of large groups of displaced people without proper toilets and inadequate water supply. The rain that fell in a few days was equivalent to the amount of rain Malawi receives in six months. Lives, homes and communities are destroyed and in need of rebuilding.
The Seibo team in Malawi are currently unable to reach our rural partners and access roads along with bridges have been largely swept away. Most schools remain closed however and more than ever vulnerable children are at risk of going hungry. It is our hope that we can send what we can in this time of need. Our appeal aims to provide life-saving supplies such as food, water purification materials, medical kits, or shelter.
We are not alone in asking for help and for this appeal we are working with the UK-based social enterprise, Cycle of Good, to raise GBP20,000. If you can help, even in a small way, we will ensure your donation gets to those in need as fast as quickly as possible.
