Workshop Report: A Journey to Malawi at Aoba-Japan Bilingual Preschool
Date:2025.02.27

Recently, we held a workshop at Aoba-Japan Bilingual Preschool Waseda Campus, featuring the amazing work of Seibo. This workshop was organized to deepen understanding of different countries as part of the PYP (Primary Years Programme) inquiry theme “Community.” We were also given the opportunity to introduce our school lunch support initiative in Malawi!

Workshop Overview

During the workshop, the children learned about Malawi through a picture story and monitor presentation, addressing questions such as, “Where is Malawi?” and “What kind of lives do the people of Malawi lead?” They showed a keen interest in the different cultures and environments, actively asking questions throughout the session.

One moment that stood out was when the children sincerely pondered the question, “How can we help the children in Malawi who lack enough money and feel hungry?” Upon learning that purchasing coffee produced in Malawi in Japan would help provide school lunches, they exclaimed, “That’s amazing! Let’s buy a lot!” They were informed that the cost of one school lunch in Malawi is approximately 15 yen, which deepened their understanding of how they can support people in a distant country.

Creative Decorations
After that, the children got to draw pictures on stickers to decorate coffee packs made in Malawi. They came up with the idea of sharing what they learned today as a gift for their parents.

The workshop also welcomed parents, who observed the children’s learning in a warm and supportive atmosphere. It was inspiring to see the children actively engaging with challenging topics, reflecting the hope that they will grow up to be capable individuals who can make a difference in the world. Moving forward, we hope to increase opportunities for children in Japan to feel a connection to the world!
